My Top Ten Achievements From The Last Decade

The end of the year has come and the end of a decade and beginning of a new one. So here is are the top 10 things I did in the last decade that I am super proud of!

1. Discovering Myself

I have learnt a lot about myself over the last few years. I am more confident and am no longer afraid of being my own wacky self. I let my ‘freak’ flag fly and am proud of who I am. I am true to myself, I’m (sometimes too) honest, loud and colourful. It has been hard to get to this place, I have made many mistakes but they have made me who I am today. I used to find it so difficult because I didn’t feel like I fit in like everyone else but now I just don’t care. My friends describe me as marmite: people either like me or they don’t and you’ll usually decide within 30 seconds of meeting me.

2. Vegan

I am really pleased I changed my diet and became vegan. I have been vegan for a whole year now. It has been difficult and I have slipped up a few times along the way. *Flashback to a weekend away when I cheated and had a lovely, rich creamy sauce with ravioli for tea, only to spend half the night throwing it back up*

3. Got on top of my eczema

My eczema used to be terrible! I was using lots of moisturiser and steroid-based creams. Then I stopped, I changed my diet (becoming vegan made a huge difference), stopped using products with SLS (the stuff that makes bubble bath and shampoo bubbly), drank more water and stopped wearing clothes that made me itch. I have also really focussed on the things I am allergic to and now I actively avoid them.

4. Travelled Abroad

Before December 2015 I had never been abroad. Then I went on a ski season to Austria. I also visited Lake Garda in Italy and Disneyland Paris (I’ve given this its own category). Getting my first passport and travelling for the first time really opened my eyes and imagination to wear I could travel.

5. Disneyland

I queued for almost 2 hours to meet Minnie Mouse. It was definitely worth it.

OMG! My favourite place ever. Pure magical. Total love for this place. SO many beautiful and happy memories. We met so many characters and Princesses. Also, Prince Charming totally winked at me.

6. Short Story Competition

So this was way back in 2010 so right back at the beginning of the decade. I entered a Short Story Competition, won regionals and was shortlisted nationally. This was a big deal for me and I am proud of it.

7. Learnt to drive

The day I brought Letty and drove her home for the first time

I passed my driving test and brought my first car – she’s called Letty.

8. Found My Passion

By pure chance, (and some help from my mum) I finally found what I love to do, what I want to do. I love working with children, especially those with additional needs and want to do more to support them. So I decided to train as a Speech and Language Therapist.

9. University

This one kind of follows on from the last. But I think it is a really big achievement. I received offers from both the universities I applied to and was accepted on the course at the beginning of September 2019.

10. Learning from my past

Let’s be really honest for a minute. A lot has gone down in the last ten years. I have made mistakes, from terrible relationships, actions with ruined friendships and had to learn to deal with my own pain. But I have decided that I am going to learn from these events and let them go. I am working on myself. I don’t want to be that person with a chip on their shoulder anymore. I want to be the person who is happy with who they are. So maybe this one is cheating because I don’t feel like I have really achieved it yet but I have included it as I’m in the mindset now and I have been working on it for a few years.

And now for 2020!

The last decade has been a mutlitude of changes for me, it brought me new opportunities, skills and confidence. I have also made lots of mistakes and learnt things from them – but that’s for another day! I am excited (and slightly terrified) of what the next decade has in store for me.
