University: What I pack…

A comprehensive packing list

So you are going to university, your accommodation is sorted and now you need to make sure you are taking everything you need. Instead of buying everything at once, I brought a few things every month leading up to uni, I was also very fortunate to have my Grandparents help me buy lots of the items I needed.

Here is a list of things I take to university. Remember to only take the things you think you will need. I’ve starred the essentials like this **. There’s no pointing packing stuff you would never normally use! As the list is quite long I have divided it into sections…

  • **Saucepans x 3 (different sizes, my parents changed to an induction cooker before I went to uni, so I took their old pans)
  • Frying pan/ wok (I didn’t take one because I don’t really use it)
  • **Baking tray x 2
  • Cake tin (I brought this part the way through the years to make cheesecake and birthday cakes)
  • **Plates x 2 (make sure they are microwavable, mine weren’t so had to buy another one for the microwave)
  • **Bowls x 2
  • **Cutlery – (I took a whole set)
  • **Mug x 2
  • Glasses x 2 (I was given a pack of four glasses, I used the spare ones for storing things and I also took a pair of wine glasses)
  • Oven gloves
  • **Tea towels x 4 (they get gross quickly and having lots means washing them less)
  • **Sharp knives (I brought this set from Lakeland)
  • Scissors (much easier to cut pizza with than a pizza cutter)
  • **Vegetable peeler
  • Hand whisk
  • **Cheese grater
  • Garlic press
  • **Tin opener (make sure you know to use yours! I managed to somehow break mine and ended up borrowing my housemates for most the year!)
  • Bottle opener (you will need one because no one can ever find theirs)
  • **Chopping board
  • **Cooking spoon x 3 ( I took one for each saucepan)
  • Spatula
  • Fish slice
  • Colander
  • **Sieve (great for draining both rice and pasta)
  • Measuring jug (my Granny had two, so she gave me one of hers)
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Food processor (I use mine all the time)
  • Breville smoothie maker (I used mine daily, its a really easy way of making sure you get fruit in your diet – buy your fruit frozen as its cheaper and lasts longer)
  • Waffle maker
  • **Microwavable Tubs (so you can cook meals in batches and freeze the leftovers – easier and cheaper)
  • **Bag clips (stop your crisps going to stale, pasta spilling everywhere, keep salad fresh)
  • **Lunch box (save money by making your own lunch)
  • Water bottle
  • Travel mug (so you can take your coffee with you)

Buy when you get there…

  • **Anti-bac spray
  • **Kitchen roll
  • **Anti-bac wipes
  • **Tinfoil (to put on trays so they are easier to clean!)
  • **Washing up liquid
  • **Washing up sponges
  • **Food

  • **Mattress Protector (my uni provided one – you want one as you don’t know who slept in that bed last)
  • **Duvet
  • **Pillows
  • **Mattress cover x 2
  • **Duvet cover x 2
  • **Pillowcases x 2 sets
  • Blanket – (great for when you get chilly studying, I took an extra one which I put over my very ugly-looking desk chair)
  • **Doorstop (I painted a large pebble, I found at the beach – try to wedge your door open so your other house mates can come and chate)
  • **Extension leads – buy a multipack from IKEA (there are never enough plugs, it can get really annoying having to unplug things all the time to free up a plug – I took 3 and used them all)
  • Speaker
  • Instax camera (I took photos of my housemates – before night outs and on birthdays – and we put them up in the kitchen)
  • Storage boxes (I took some like these, I filled them with spare stationery, cleaning things and odds and ends – helps your room fill less cluttered)
  • Room decorations:
    • Bunting
    • Fairy lights
    • Command hooks (strong and leave no marks)
    • Pins (if you have a notice board, avoid making holes in the walls!)

  • **Toilet roll
  • **Hand soap

  • Sellotape
  • Highlighters
  • Post-it notes (I used mine all the time, often as reminders stuck to the wall)
  • Writing pad (I took 3 pads and brought them home, as I did most of my note-taking on my computer/iPad. Mainly used the paper for exercising and planning assignments)
  • 30cm ruler
  • **Diary/planner (I use a small weekly diary to write in assignments, meetings and pre-reading or activities which are due to help manage my time)

  • Stapler
  • **Pens

  • Scissors
  • **Folders (I have one for each unit, I went with 4 and brought more through the year, organised notes makes revision much easier)

  • Printer (I would print off all my notes and put them into folders, as I can’t read my own handwriting very well)
  • Printer paper
  • **Laptop
  • USB Stick (to back up your work or if you are working on uni computers – I save everything on my laptop and backup on the iCloud, so never used it)
  • iPad & pen

Buy when you get there…

  • Wall planner (These were given out for free in freshers week, so wait till you get there)

  • Sewing kit
  • **First aid kit – (plasters, paracetamol – I used mine several times for myself and housemates)
  • Playing cards – (not your best set, you’ll want them for drinking games and they will get sticky)
  • Cards Against Humanity – (I love my set, we played it regularly not just when we were drinking)
  • **Bag for lectures – (I used a rucksack, this year I am getting this one)
  • Lighter – (for birthday candles, no one can ever find one)
  • Fancy dress – (I took a few basics to make up costumes e.g. bandana for a pirate)

Just in case box

Before I started uni, my mum had me a bag of just in case items. Those things you might need in an emergency, if you are having a really bad day or if you run out of money. I added a few things and replaced what I used.

  • Pasta
  • Pasta sauce (I had a jar of pesto)
  • Paracetamol
  • Chocolate
  • Mug cake mix
  • Toothpaste
  • Tissue
  • Lipbalm

I think that is everything! Good luck!
